Should Brands Go the Guerrilla Marketing Way?

Guerrilla marketing is a dynamic and unconventional approach that most brands are adopting to promoting products or services through innovative, low-cost tactics. Brands often turn to these methods to create buzz, engage with audiences directly, and differentiate themselves from competitors.

Guerrilla marketing is different from traditional marketing such that it relies much on personal interactions. Basically from an original idea to engage its target audience and work with smaller groups of product or service promoters whose role is to spread the word about the products in a particular location or region rather than using widespread marketing campaigns.  Many brands are increasingly turning to guerrilla marketing tactics to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Here is how some brands are doing marketing the guerilla way:

Flyers and Posters

Brands have come up with ways to strategically place eye-catching flyers or posters in high-traffic areas, such as urban walls, bus stops, or community bulletin boards to capture the attention of passersby into buying their products. Some brands have also adopted the use of unique designs, bold colors, and compelling messages can make these print materials stand out. Some brands even incorporate 3D elements or interactive components.

Road Trips and Mobile Marketing

This type of marketing  includes wrapping cars, vans, or even bicycles with brand logos and messages and driving them around busy areas or events helps increase visibility and curiosity.

Brands have also adopted the popup events type of marketing where they set up temporary, mobile events in unexpected locations to attract large crowds. These events often include product sampling, demonstrations, and interactive activities. Instead of paying for billboards across different locations to pass the same message, brands are now using  trucks or buses with large, moving billboards ensures the marketing message reaches a broad audience across different locations.

Flash Mobs and Public Stunts

Flash Mobs entails coordinating groups of people to perform a synchronized activity, such as dancing or singing, in public spaces to draw significant attention of passers by. Lately, brands are using such stunts to capture immediate attention and media coverage.  and often goes viral on social media.

Street Art and Chalk Drawings

This is another form of marketing brands are employing in their daily marketing techniques. This includes commissioning  artists to create large, visually striking murals in public spaces that incorporate their brand elements or messages for publicity purposes. Chalk art is also gaining popularity with brands where they create  temporary, interactive chalk drawings on sidewalks or pedestrian areas to engage people and encourage social media sharing.

Handouts and Freebies

This involves sample distribution where brands hand out free samples of products in busy areas, accompanied by friendly brand ambassadors, to create a positive brand experience. Other times, brands distribute branded Merchandise  such as tote bags, water bottles, or T-shirts, can leave a lasting impression to their customers.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Interactive Installations

Brands are using augmented reality to create interactive and immersive experiences for users in public spaces. Some go as far as setting up interactive installations  that require audience participation, such as digital screens that respond to touch or movement.

Social Media Integration

This involves brands encouraging people to share their experiences with the guerrilla marketing activity on social media using specific hashtags. They also come up with viral challenges from time to time to keep customers engaged.

Case Studies

Red Bull for instance is Known for extreme stunts, like sponsoring skydives from the stratosphere, creating massive buzz and media coverage. The cocacola brand also did a campaign case study to deploy happiness machines that dispense  more than just coke to delight its customers and bring out the happy mood.

Ultimately, I think guerrilla marketing tactics are highly effective in capturing attention and creating memorable brand experiences. They also help brands think out of the box on matters customer service.
