Last evening we hosted Safaricom Ltd as we got to meet the winner and runners up of the recently concluded Blaze BYOB TV show. BYOB (Be Your Own Boss) TV show is a brainchild of BLAZE Kenya, which in turn is a sub-brand of Safaricom. Blaze is a product geared towards the youth aged 26 years and below and is tailored specifically to meet their communication needs.

19 year old part time designer and model Valentine Nekesa was named winner of the 8 week show at a grand finale held at Film Studios. The young lady walks away with Ksh.5 Million which is split in Ksh.2 Million in business advice and mentorship, and Ksh.3 Million in business capital.

Two other contestants namely David Kimani and Safe Joe qualified for the finals with Valentine taking the win. While Valentine is in the fashion industry, Safe Joe is in music and David presented on adult literacy.  The first runners up, Safe Joe Mugweru walked away with Sh 1,000,000 while David Kimani won Sh. 700,000 to plough into his business. Each of the remaining contestants also walks away with a cash award that will go towards helping them achieve their dreams.

An excited Nekesa said, “I am elated for this endorsement of my growth during the time I spent on the show. I have learned how to bring out my leadership skills, and these have seen me make it to the finals. BLAZE BYOB has been an eye-opener for the Kenyan youth, and the country in general; I thank my fellow contestants for coming out and demonstrating that the country’s youth have what it takes to lead,” said Nekesa.

The winning lady Valentine Nekesa is a student at Mount Kenya University is from Kakamega. Her mother passed on and she has been raised by her auntie since the age of 13. She plans to use her winnings to rent a shop, purchase sewing machines and quality fabrics, and also hire employees.
